More than anything, 12 year old Tim Webster wants a dogs, but his parents tell him it is out of the question. While playing near a group of homeless men, Tim encounters the Professor, a man full of stories. Upon hearing a story about a certain “star” and a wish that would be granted to the “pure of heart,” young Tim decides to put it to the test and makes his wish.
The next morning, Tim awakens to find he himself transformed into a dog. As this was not his intent, he realizes he needs to search for the Professor on order to find the secret that will change himself back into a boy.
During his travels and adventures - from encounters with other wildlife, to getting shot at by a farmer- he learns valuable lessons about the treatment of animals and sacrificing his own life to help another.
After losing his chance of making the wish to turn him back, it is the help of his best friend Haley who wishes him to be home safe again, thus reuniting him with his family.
